“In Death you Mourn Me”
In death you mourn me.
In death you cry for me.
The same child who was not allowed to be who I am around you.
In life, you misgender me. In death, you misgender me.
You mourn to the world that I was your daughter, when you knew the daughter you birthed no longer remained.
You mourn to the world-”Oh my baby is gone,” but when was the last time I saw you momma? When was the last time you spoke to me daddy?
So, don’t cry for me, don’t shed a tear. The moment I became your son, I no longer existed.
I needed you to acknowledge me. I needed you to affirm me. I needed you to love me. I needed you to stand up for me.
I needed you to tell our family, your family-”That’s my baby and if you don’t like it, get the fuck out.” But you never did and I knew you never would.
The moment I was dead to you, I was dead to you. So, don’t cry for me, don’t shed a tear.
That time has passed and so have I. by Dr. Nichelle Rivers
