Dr. Riversí Professional Bio

Dr. Nichelle L. Rivers is a native of Memphis, Tennessee. She is a graduate of Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN where she holds a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in Visual Art and a Masters of Education in Educational Administration (M. Ed). She received her Doctorate of Education (Ed. D) from the University of Memphis.

Dr. Rivers spent a year working and living in a small village in Ghana, West Africa where she set up a Teaching Resource Center, served as the Director/Teacher Fellow for the IFESH organization and taught classes at the Assin Foso Teacher Training College. During her time in Ghana, she was featured in the spring 2002 IFESH Update’s national publication, where she described her initial culture shock upon arriving in Ghana, West Africa. She spent a summer in Orce, Spain working on an archaeological digging team in search of pre-historic man. Dr. Rivers was featured in the November 2003 issue of Memphis magazine describing her many educational adventures and artistic talents.

She is a practicing visual artist with over fifteen years of experience in public education having served as a teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent. She has also served as a professional development consultant and is considered an expert in the area of bullying, race, gender equity, culturally responsive classrooms, peace education and social and restorative justice practices. She is a skilled instructional leadership coach and has amassed years of experience supervising the school improvement process and evaluating the effectiveness of teacher pedagogy.

She is the President and founder of the P.O.W.E.R Foundation, an advocacy and empowerment organization that works with LGBT youth, at-risk student populations and local faith and community-based organizations in the Nassau County area. She is a strong advocate for LGBT rights, access and opportunity, in addition to culturally responsive educational best practices. Her passion for the education of ALL children continues to drive her. Dr. Rivers’ lives by the mantra from one of her “sheroe’s” Audre Lorde, “When you dare to be powerful, to use your strengths in the service of your vision, then it becomes less and less important whether you are afraid.” She and her family reside in the Long Island area.
